SOUTHEND United are close to appointing a new first team coach, Echosport understands.
The Shrimpers have been interviewing for the post since the end of last season.
And an experienced coach who has previously managed in League Two as well as working with a Premier League club is among those still in contention for the post.
However, a former Blues striker who has since gone on to enjoy a career in coaching has also held talks with Shrimpers boss Phil Brown who is bidding to get the club back on track after back to back relegations.
The new appointment will bolster a backroom team which has already seen Craig Fagan promoted from under 23 coach to assistant manager.
