ALMOST £100million will be spent on transforming and building new estates across Basildon, it has been revealed.

Council chiefs have unveiled major plans to revamp “tired” estates in the town, which now “lend themselves to crime.”

A new estate with 200 homes, costing £54 million, is set to be built as part of the plans, which could include a new school and GP surgery.

Several sites are being considered.

Basildon’s Tories also unveiled plans to spend £40million to “completely transform” Basildon’s estates.

Andrew Baggott, leader of the council, said: “Our estates are crucial, they are the core of the town.

“They were all built 60 years ago, and they’re all falling apart now.

“They lend themselves to crime.

“This will be the biggest transformation of estates Basildon has ever seen.

“We will be using consultants and experts to come up with a plan of action.

“We want people to smile about the area they live in, not be upset.”

The overhaul of estates will include new homes, demolishing empty garages for car parking spaces, improving security with CCTV, and repairs to communal areas.

Bosses refused to disclose where the new estate could be built.

The estate overhaul plan is set to be approved at a council meeting next week.

Documents read: “Substantial investment is required in order to meet the aspirations of residents.

“It is anticipated that this programme will require an investment of £10 million a year for four years.

“The ambition of the administration is to provide funding for an additional 200 homes.

“Initial work suggests that this would require funding in the region of £54 million.

“Officers are currently modelling the impact of this on the medium term outlook and 30 year forecast to ensure that the resources are made available on a timescale that balances effective delivery with managing the financial impact.

Yetunde Adeshille, councillor of the Vange ward, has launched a campaign with residents to tackle crime on the 3/4 estate in the town.

She said: “This funding will be crucial, it’s badly needed. It’s not just the 3/4 estate that’s struggling. I’ll be screaming for the estate to get the funding.”
