THE coastguard was scrambled to Southend seafront with reports of a possible unexploded bomb.

Southend Coastguard were sent out to the beach opposite Arnold Palmer Mini Golf at 9.40am this morning following reports from a runner.

A spokesman said: "We inspected the object which looked very much like just an old car starter motor but for clarity pictures and measurements were sent over to the Army Explosive Ordnance Disposal team to confirm.

"Post reviewing the pictures it was indeed confirmed as a starter motor, so the team removed the object from the beach and then stood down.

"Objects often get washed up on our beaches, especially after bad weather and due to Southend’s historical location. If you see something that is an unusual shape, size and especially if it’s rusty, it could be an unexploded ordnance.

" Please don’t touch it or move it, instead call 999 and ask for the Coastguard immediately."
