A POLICE force has said its officers are “committed” to supporting and helping military veterans who may find themselves in custody.

Essex Police has worked closely with Project Nova for several years and in the last year has referred 281 former Armed Forces personnel to the organisation.

The initiative sees dedicated volunteers and professionals work to assess the needs of the veterans before putting in place specialist support to help them.

Samantha Bridge, the force’s lead for Project Nova, says officers understand experiences during military service can make people vulnerable.

She said: “Essex Police has worked closely with Project Nova for several years now, with great success.

“And last year we introduced a new system to ensure we can help even more veterans who have been arrested.

“More than 100 volunteers from across the force have now offered their services to ensure all veterans arrested in Essex are aware of the support Project Nova can give.

“Many have gone on to obtain the help and support they need, from mental health and housing support to help with employment and general advice.

“The majority of those who have been helped through Project Nova have not had to step back into a police station, which is fantastic.”
