Construction works on a large footbridge over a busy road will take place after safety concerns were raised, council bosses have revealed.

Essex County Council Highways department will be carrying out the works to the bridge over Golden Jubilee Way, Wickford to strengthen the joints after concerns were raised over loose concrete on the structure.

Residents also took to social media after highways vehicles were spotted near the bridge.

An Essex Highways spokesman said: “Following reports of loose concrete on the structure, engineers have attended this site. They have investigated and removed some areas of concrete and will install plates over some of the movement joints to ensure continued safety of the structure. There is currently no risk to the public either using Golden Jubilee Way, or the footbridge.”
