An historic pub is set to close its doors for a month as it undergoes a major refurbishment.

The Half Moon on Rayleigh High Street will be temporarily shutting its doors from Saturday, July 19, and will reopen in mid August.

The pub will be under the new management of Sarah Wiseman and will be employing five new members of staff ahead of its reopening.

Sarah, who will be moving from Bedfordshire to take up the new role, said: “I’ve had pubs in Essex before and loved it as everyone here is so friendly.

“ I was desperate to move back and have been searching for a pub in the county for months.

“When I walked into The Half Moon, I knew it was ‘the one’.

“It’s a beautiful old building with a wonderful atmosphere. It may look tired now but it’ll be stunning when the work is done.”

Around £150,000 is being spent on the renovation of the 19th century pub, which will see new lighting, signage, seating and plants installed outside.

The inside of the pub will meanwhile be getting wooden flooring and panelling, leather upholstered seating and pictures of Rayleigh in bygone days to reflect its heritage.

The inside will also be split into three areas – the bar, a new lounge and games room – to meet different needs of customers.

The games room will be kitted out with a new pool table, dart board and four-large screens for sporting events.

Star Pubs and Bars, which owns The Half Moon, is also planning to offer wider range of wines, spirits, cocktails and hot drinks.

Sarah add: “There’ll be something different to appeal to everyone at some point during the week.”

“I love getting to know people and seeing customers having a good time, so a community local like The Half Moon is perfect.

“All the regulars have been incredibly welcoming and supportive of the plans.

“I can’t wait to open the doors.”

Star Pubs and Bars’ area manager Steve Charlton added: “We’re delighted to be investing in such a well-known Rayleigh pub.

“The refurbishment will bring it into the 21st century and give people lots more reasons to visit.

“Sarah’s experience, passion and exciting plans are just what The Half Moon needs.

“We wish her all the best.”
