A warehouse and retail complex in Basildon has been given the green light for construction after councillors unanimously agreed to plans which could see more than 70 full time jobs created.

The site in Crompton Close, within the Pipps Hill Industrial Area, is currently occupied by fuel dispenser firm Gilbarco Veeder-Root.

Plans for the new warehouse, which Gilbarco claims will create 70 full time jobs, were initially agreed to by Basildon Borough Council’s planning committee in October 2019.

Minor variations were agreed to in August 2020 and now the developer has returned seeking further changes to the application.

The latest proposals will see the shops in the retail section of the development reduced in height.

In turn, councillors requested Gilbarco provide 10 addition electrical vehicle charging points.

Speaking on behalf of Gilbarco, application agent Harry Cole agreed to the demand.

Cllr Craig Rimmer welcomed the application as a boost to the town’s economy and job market.

The 2.38-hectare site will see the construction of a three-storey office linked to a series of single storey warehouse and factory units and almost 300 parking spaces – 77 for staff and visitors and 200 for the retail area.

Councillors voted unanimously to approve the amendments to the scheme.
