A NEIGHBOUR heard a woman cry “let me out, let me go” during an alleged sexual assault, a court heard.

Malcolm Mason is standing trial for allegedly raping, sexually assaulting and assaulting a woman in Southend.

The 50-year-old of Wimborne Road, Southend is alleged to have attacked the woman between January 11 and 14, 2020.

He denies rape, sexual assault and assault occasioning actual bodily harm.

A witness told a jury at Basildon Crown Court that he heard the cries of a woman coming from upstairs as he left his home.

Prosecuting, Julia Faure Walker, said: “When you shut your bedroom door, what did you hear or know at that stage?”

The man said: “I thought it was ‘let me out, let me go’. I interpreted it as someone trying to get out of the door and being forced back in.”

Ms Faure Walker asked if he had heard anything else.

The man said he had heard a female voice say “stop” and “no”.

He said he did not hear a male voice during the incident.

The jury was shown CCTV footage of the man coming out of his door and raising his head looking at the ceiling when he heard the noise.

The man told the jury said the voices “didn’t go on for long” and that it was “a few seconds”, but that the person sounded “scared”.

Ms Faure Walker asked what the man did after hearing the voices.

He said: “I didn’t know what to do, I didn’t know if they were in a relationship, I didn’t want to get involved.

“If things got more serious then I would have. I went to my friend’s house and came back in the early hours of the morning.”

The trial continues.
