Rochford residents have been targeted by door to door salesmen, with con artists prompting a stark warning from Essex Police.
The team say they have received a number of reports from residents across the Rochford area over the past week regarding door to door salesmen, purporting to be on an ex-offender program, selling items which appear to be overvalued.
The force have warned these characters are often referred to as Nottingham Knockers, and although this activity is not fraudulent, it is however illegal.
A certificate under the Pedlars Act 1871 must be provided by the local authority and their regularly presented ID does not serve as such.

A spokesman from the force, said: "We recommend that you do not buy goods from persons at your front door without ensuring that the person or organisation is legitimate.
"Never let them into your property and do not be intimidated into buying goods just to get rid of them. Politely refuse and close the door.
