Bosses at the Cliffs Pavilion are hoping to add a new 200-seater restaurant as part of a major extension to the iconic theatre.

The proposals are currently sat with Southend Council and would see a new entrance and lobby area added alongside the dining space.

The extension would see a a heptagonal-shaped building used for the restaurant to pay homage to the pre-war designs of the theatre.

Bosses say the proposals are not aimed at bringing in more people to the theatre, but instead making the overall experience better for those visiting for shows.

Artist's impressions drawn up by Designlsm show how the building would be transformed by the new restaurant, which would sit close to Station Road.

No images of the inside of the extension are available through the planning documents but a layout of the new eating space is included.

On the subject of the new lobby area, the plans state: "The new, enlarged entrance and connecting lobby area will allow for much better access into and circulation within, with a dedicated merchandising area, improved bars and concessions, accommodating much larger crowds and still allow people to maintain safe distances in a post covid environment."

The ground floor foyer bar is set to be revamped as part of the proposals, while the former restaurant at first floor is set to become a new theatre bar and lounge.

Outdoor terraces, toilets and the double height cafe and bar are also in line for an upgrade.

The works are hoped to improve the overall look of the “dated” building by tying its varied architectural styles together.

According to the plans, styles include the 1950s styling of the auditorium, fly tower and two- storey restaurant and foyer block along with the more modern interpretation of the 1990s extension.

Speaking about the extension last month, Ellen McPhillips, theatre director at Southend Theatres, said: “The scheme would bring much needed investment into a well-loved and well-used theatre.

"If approved, this will see hugely improved circulation spaces, additional bars and a new restaurant. The customer experience prior to seeing the shows would be greatly enhanced.

"The Cliffs Pavilion is an essential factor in a healthy evening economy and therefore it’s essential that appropriate investment is made to secure its long-term future both as a national number one touring venue and a local flagship venue."

Southend Council will have the final say on the application later this year.
