An interactive map has revealed the exotic and dangerous animals owned by privately in south Essex.

From monkeys, to dangerous and venomous snakes to lizards there are plenty of animals classed as dangerous and there probably some very close to you right now.

The interactive map by International Animal Welfare Charity Born Free shows the animals in each borough across the country.

We've all become familiar with Netflix's Tiger King and big owners in the USA but here in Essex there's lots of wild animals kept at private homes.

The charity says it is thought there are tens of thousands of exotic pets kept by private individuals in the UK.

In 2021, Born Free revealed nearly 4,000 dangerous wild animals were being kept privately, and legally, under licence in Great Britain under the Dangerous Wild Animals Act 1976, including at least 320 wild cats, 274 primates and 508 venomous snakes.

In Castle Point there are: 3 Capuchin Monkeys, 1 Broad Banded Copperheads, 2 Panamint Rattlesnakes, 1 Southern Pacific Rattlesnake, 4 Aruba Island Rattlesnakes, 1 Western Diamondback Rattlesnake, 2 Beaded Lizards, 2 Indochinese Spitting Cobras, 3 Monocled Cobras, 1 Snouted Cobra, 3 Pope's Tree Vipers.

According to the charity in Southend there is: 2 Copperhead Snakes, 1 Cape Coral Cobra, 1 Gaboon Viper, 1 Eyelash Viper, 1 Western Diamondback Rattlesnake, 1 Sidewinder, 1 Neo Tropical Rattlesnake, 1 Prairie Rattlesnake, 1 Monocled Cobra, 1 Pygmy Rattlesnake, 1 White Lipped Viper, 1 Wagler's Temple Pit Viper, 1 Sand Viper.
