Lane restrictions will be in place in part of Basildon when roadworks get underway this week.

Essex Highways is planning to upgrade the pedestrian crossing on Great Oaks, opposite the magistrates court.

It will see the pelican crossing upgraded to a puffin crossing, while traffic lights at the junction will be replaced with new low voltage equipment.

The roadworks will include the replacing or renewing of underground cable ducts under the carriageway and pavements, as well as replacing equipment above ground.

The work is due to tomorrow - Monday, September 20 - and is expected to take six weeks.

Essex Highways says the work will be carried out overnight to minimise congestion in the area.

The work will take place between 7pm and 5am Monday to Saturday.

A spokesman added: “During working hours it will be necessary to have lane closures in place in order to carry out the work in a safe manner.

“Traffic management will remain in place during the day to assist pedestrians crossing the road, but both lanes will be open to vehicles to keep traffic flowing.

“Pedestrian access will be maintained at all times and for safety, we propose to install a temporary controlled pedestrian crossings across Great Oaks whilst the works are undertaken.

“Advance warning notices will be used to advertise the works.”
