After reports of street racing last night police were authorised to use dispersal order powers in the Roscommon Way area of Canvey.

Officers were in attendance last night (September 18) and had powers to move people on if they were believed to be involved in crime, anti-social behaviour or disorder.

The order was in place between 10.30pm yesterday and 7am today (September 19).

The area where the order was in effect included Roscommon Way and its junctions with Canvey Road, Haven Road, Romainville Way and Northwick Road.

It also included Canvey Road at the junction with Haven Road, and the Northwick Road junction with Canvey Road.

Inspector Dan McHugh said: “We regularly patrol the area and work closely with partners to tackle anti-social driving connected to unauthorised car cruise events.

“We have no issues with true car enthusiasts who meet in sensible locations with the landowner’s consent with roadworthy cars and are respectful to the local community.

“But irresponsible and dangerous driving puts lives at risk.

“We will use legislation available to us, such as dispersal orders, to continue tackling this issue. We will also use legislation to seize vehicles being used to commit offences.”

Anyone who witnesses crime and anti-social behaviour is asked to report it online at essex.police.uk or use the 'Live Chat' button to speak to an online operator between 7am-11pm.
