Bus services are being diverted after a sewage main has burst in Benfleet.

The sewage main, which has burst at the Tarpot junction just after the Sadlers Farm roundabout, is understood to be affecting traffic between the A130 and Hadleigh.

As a result, the road has been closed due to sewer works on A13 London Road Eastbound between Homefields Avenue and The Tarpot Harvester.

The incident, first reported to AA Traffic News on Sunday (September 19), has also affected First Bus services 21/22/28:

  • Service 21 will divert along Kents Hill Road to Benfleet station missing out Manor Road Loop and Tarpots.
  • Service 22 will divert up and down Canvey Way in both directions.
  • Service 28 will divert down Essex Way and Canvey Way in both directions.

First Bus say they have not been notified yet how long the works will be in place.

We will bring you updates as we have them.

An Essex Highways spokesperson said: “The traffic problems in Benfleet this morning are due to a sewer collapse which is the responsibility of Essex and Suffolk Water.

“A crew from Essex and Suffolk Water are now onsite to fix the problem and then reinstate the road.

“An Essex Highways street works inspector will liaise with the company to ensure that reinstatement of the road is timely and of a good standard.”
