A MAN has admitted possessing a knife in connection with the fatal stabbing of teenager Luke Bellfield, saying he carried the blade “in self defence”.

Alfie Pollard, 18, of Woodside, Leigh appeared at Southend Magistrates’ Court on Monday charged with possession of a bladed article and possession of a Class B drug.

The court was told how Luke Bellfield had chased Pollard who “retaliated” and stabbed him.

Pollard said he’d had previous issues with a rival gang and had chosen to arm himself.

He admitted the two charges during Monday’s court hearing at Southend Magistrates’ Court.

Pollard was charged in connection with the death of Luke Bellfield, 18, who died from his injuries following an incident in Old Leigh.

He suffered a stab wound to the heart near to the Peterboat pub, in High Street, on February 26.

Prosecuting solicitor Sharon Hall said: “On the day of the incident Pollard on his own went out with a knife and says he had previous issues with rival group men and for that reason chose to arm himself going out.

“A group of three men saw Pollard and because of previous issues they chased him into an alley.

“Luke Bellfield died in the incident and also led the chase and attacked Pollard who retaliated.

“Pollard stabbed Luke Bellfield who died after the incident.

“There will be no manslaughter charges for Pollard and it was self defence.”

Defending solicitor Warren Mitchell said: “There’s a lot to be said about this going to the crown court.

“This is a very serious knife crime and there is no application for bail.”

Pollard will next appear at Basildon Crown Court on October 18.
