A MAN was covered in an "unknown substance" outside a popular restaurant on Sunday afternoon, prompting a huge emergency service response.

Both police and ambulance services attended the scene on Knightswick Road, Canvey, after the man had sustained injuries from the substance.

Crews from Canvey Fire Station were also in attendance, who poured water over the man.

The Echo understands the incident took place near the Oysterfleet bar and restaurant.

The nature of the substance has yet to be confirmed.

A spokesman from the Canvey Fire Station, said: "Canvey crews were called to an incident on Knightswick Road on Sunday afternoon following a male sustaining injuries after contact with an unknown substance.

"Crews dowsed the male with water and made the area around safe before handing over to the Police and Ambulance crews.
