A key road in Basildon was blocked in both directions following an incident.
Traffic was unable to pass through parts of Nethermayne, with First Essex reporting the road was closed around midday.
AA's traffic map showed the closure was in place between The Knares and Laindon Link.
It said it was in place due to a police incident.
A spokesman for Essex Police said: "We were called to concerns for the welfare of a man on a bridge at Nethermayne, Basildon, at around 11.34 am today.
"Officers attended. A man was brought to safety and has been left in the care of medical professionals.
"The road was closed whilst we dealt, but is now reopened."

Nethermayne is closed.
To Lakeside/Grays leaving the Bus Stn to the Five Bells via Lay Hill Rd to the Barge to A13 via the Old London Rd in both directions.
There will be no service to/from hospital.
