“We will get through this tragedy together if we stick together and support one another,” Southend Council’s leader has said.

Cllr Ian Gilbert has pledged the community will continue to stand together in the wake of Sir David's death.

The killing of the beloved MP and father-of-five’s has triggered an outpouring of grief, with numerous floral offerings and tributes, demonstrating how much he meant to his constituency.

“It’s clear from the number of upset residents who have visited to lay wreaths and flowers, how much Sir David meant to everyone in the Borough, and it seems everyone has a story about him,” Cllr Gilbert said.

“The community events which have taken place to honour him, such as the vigil at the Civic Centre and Belfairs, show how the community is taking strength from one another at this time and supporting one another and I am sure we will all continue to do that.

“I know from my conversations with colleagues and councillors, that David’s death has shocked everyone and there is of course, deep concern and sympathy for his family and loved ones. We are supporting one another the best we can, and I know, Southend being the wonderful place it is, that our communities will be doing the same because of the caring, kind people who live in the borough.”

He added: “Please reach out to someone, a friend, a neighbour, a charity, if you are struggling with what happened to Sir David and need support. We will get through this tragedy together if we stick together and support one another.”

If you wish to pay your respects and leave a floral tribute then do so at his constituency base at Iveagh Hall in Leigh Road.
