RATS are “running riot” across Rayleigh prompting warnings to families to keep children away from a youth shelter in the town.

A Rochford Council investigation has been launched into numerous sightings of rats near the Audley Mills doctors surgery, and the youth shelter in Webster’s Way.

The vermin have also been spotted during the day in the gardens at the councils own buildings on South Street.

James Newport, councillor of the Downhall and Rawreth ward, spotted the rats when coming out of the doctors surgery.

He said: “They were just on the path outside - a few of them in the middle of the day. One of my biggest areas of concern is the teen shelter in Webster’s way car park which is seemingly alive with rats.

“This is not the kind of environment that is acceptable for our younger people to have to put up with. I would advise parents to to tell their children to steer clear of the area whilst the situation is hopefully dealt with.

“We have quite a lot of rats in Rayleigh, but they’re just getting braver and braver.”

This comes after a children’s playground in Priory Park in Southend has been “infested” with rats.

Rochford Council is understood to be “discussing” the problem with it’s pest control team.

Marcus Hotten, assistant director in charge of place and environment, is dealing with the issue. Rayleigh Town Council is also in charge of pest control in certain parts of the town.

Mr Newport added: “From afar they may look cute but they also carry many diseases. It’s a health hazard, especially when they’re so close to the surgery.

“They’re actually quite brazen now. There must be three or four each time I see them, or residents spot them.

“The council needs to do more to keep the area clean and tidy.

“There is a huge problem with waste at the rear of shops and restaurants, which may be causing the issue.

“It would appear that there is a significant issue throughout our town and that has yet to be addressed.”

Rochford Council was contacted for comment.
