Halloween is just a round the corner and that means those classic ghost stories will be retold once again.

Everyone has their own theories and tales to tell, and thankfully Paul Lee has put together an interactive website which outlines some of the buildings in Basildon and Rayleigh which may be haunted.

So here are those buildings pinned on the map, and what ghostly goings-on have occurred there.

Great Chalvedon Hall

The building is allegedly home to a phantom schoolboy in a cap wearing clothing from the 1940s.

There are said to be stories of other children and poltergeist-like behaviour too.

A scullery maid who lived in the attic and wears a white cap and a dark long sleeved dress has also been spotted in the hall.

Some people have reported dogs have refused to go into the main living room because a spooky presence.

Church of the Holy Cross

A floating monk in a reddish gown has been seen in the churchyard to a point about 500 yards across the road from the church.

On other occasions, he has been seen on a footpath and in the church, and a cyclist nearly ran into the ghost.

Noises and footsteps have been heard inside the church at night, when it is empty.

Billericay Police Station

The town police station hasn’t quite been the sanctuary some have hoped for.

he sound of footsteps coming up the stairs, an airlock door opening and slamming, and banging and crashings have all been heard in the building.

One theory is the spooky happenings are being caused by former Chief Inspector George Manning, who died in 1976 after being involved in a crash.

On one occasion, a set of vehicle keys are said to have fallen a hook on the wall when no one was near them.

The Rayleigh Lodge

A young woman in a long dress has been seen at the iconic building.

There have been further reports of a "pink mist", around the lodge, the sensation of being brushed past on the stairs, cold fingers on the shoulder and an old landlord's dog being reticent about his owner's bedroom.

Running Well

Based to the north of Wickford, this 6th century well is said be watched over by a spooky ghost.

It is thought to be that of a nun who was raped and murdered while visiting the site.

A ghostly figure of a woman sitting side-saddle on a white horse has also been seen nearby too.
