THE funeral service for Sir David Amess MP will be held in a London cathedral, it has been announced.

The funeral of the Conservative MP will be at Westminster Cathedral on November 23.

Cardinal Vincent Nichols, the leader of Roman Catholics in England and Wales, will preside at the 10.30am service.

The father-of-five died while meeting constituents at Belfairs Methodist Church in Leigh earlier this month.

Sir David, 69, was allegedly attacked shortly after midday while carrying out duties in his Southend West constituency.

Ali Harbi Ali, 25, has been charged with the murder of Sir David. He may face a trial in March next year, the Old Bailey previously heard.

Ali was not asked to enter pleas to charges of murder and preparing acts of terrorism between May 1 2019 and September this year.

He is accused of travelling by train from his home in Kentish Town, north London, to attend Sir David’s surgery at Belfairs Methodist Church.

A preliminary post-mortem report gave the cause of death as multiple stab wounds to the chest.
