YOBS hurled bricks and stones at a moving bus, smashing a window and the driver’s wing mirror.

First buses have been targeted on Canvey repeatedly in recent years.

Bosses have previously threatened that services could be pulled from the island if vandalism problems persist.

The number 27 service was targeted near the Haystack Pub, on Furtherwick Road, on Tuesday night, at around 9.30pm.

As the bus pulled away, stones peppered the windows on the left hand side.

Around 20 seconds later, huge bricks smashed the right sided window and the drivers wing mirror.

A passenger, 56, from Southend, who wished to remain anonymous, said: “It was pretty scary.

“We were lucky that the bus wasn’t that full, but there was a man sitting right next to the window when it smashed.

“There must have been about three teenagers when the stones hit my side.

“It wasn’t far when the bricks hit but it would have been a separate group. The window was completely shattered.

“The driver pulled over further up and the bus went out of service. I had to get another bus.

“The driver was pretty shaken up. I told him they need to wear crash helmets!”

The number 27 service travels from Southend to Canvey, travelling through Westcliff, Leigh, Hadleigh, and Benfleet.

Peter May, councillor of the Canvey central ward, added: “We’ve got to try and stop this. There’s so much pressure on the police at the moment, but these people need to be caught.

“I really hope First don’t cut the services, it would let these idiots win.”

Dan Worley, manager at First Hadleigh, said: “Thankfully no injuries were sustained to either our driver or travelling passengers.

“We are asking everyone to be vigilant, especially with the dark early evenings approaching as the clocks go back this coming weekend and if you recognise anyone or know who is involved in this activity, please provide our driver with details or report it to the police to help them apprehend the people involved.”
