TWO care workers were caught on camera allegedly attacking an elderly woman with dementia at a care home after her granddaughter became concerned, a court heard.

Blessing Okeke-Nwojeh, 44, Clayburn Circle, Basildon, and Hemlata Ramdin, 40, of Braybrooke, Basildon are standing trial at Basildon Crown Court charged with ill treatment.

The jury was told yesterday the women has severe dementia and the pair slapped, pulled and dragged her about at the Ghyllgrove Care Home in Basildon.

The incidents were revealed after the worried granddaughter installed a camera in the woman’s room, the case was told.

Prosecuting Nicola May said: “The woman was roughly handled and physically abused.

She was grabbed by the wrist, slapped and pushed to the bed and her wrists were grabbed as she was taken off the bed.

“In early January 2019 the worried granddaughter installed a hidden camera after concerns about the treatment of her grandmother.

“The footage was shown to the care home firm director who agreed it was not what she would expect from care assistants.

“The footage resulted in the pair being dismissed and the police being contacted.”

The jury were told the woman was formally diagnosed with dementia in 2016.

Prosecuting Nicola May told the court the woman had deteriorated and she was had lost awareness of her surroundings and found it hard to communicate and engage in activities.

She told the court the woman was also left partly undressed after the incident.

The court was shown short clips of the incidents which showed a care worker push and slap the woman.

It also recorded her screaming during the incidents at the care home and a family member sat in court crying as the footage was shown.

A statement from the granddaughter read out to the court said: “I was concerned she was being mistreated and she had 11 unexplained falls and there were other occasions when I felt her care was not met.”

The trial continues.
