The AA have released their Restaurant Guide for 2022, with a number of restaurants from Essex featuring.

In total, 23 from across the county were included, with Dedham being the place with the most at three.

Now in its 28th edition, AA’s "The Restaurant Guide 2022" provides food lovers with breakdowns of restaurants by county, including a detailed description of each destination, information on latest chef changes, opening times, sample menu prices and images of many of the featured locations.

Assessments of AA-inspected establishments are based on the experience of the Hotel and Restaurant inspectors on the occasion.

The restaurants are then awarded 1-5 ‘rosettes’ depending on the inspectors assessment.

If you would like to see the full guide, it is available to purchase in bookstores and online.

The best performing resturants in Essex based on that metric are as follow.

Which Essex restaurants were given the highest marks by the AA?

Le Talbooth, Dedham (Three Rosettes)

This restaurant has a very picturesque location by the River Stour, with a canopy-shaded terrace being a great place to tuck into some quality food.

Dishes to be sampled include sweetbreads served in open ravioli with wild garlic, pommes souµées and peppercorn sauce.

For dessert you would be amiss to not try the Black Forest soufflé with Kirsch-soaked chocolate sponge, vanilla Chantilly and black cherry sorbet.

Haywards Restaurant, Epping (Three Rosettes)

The Haywards Restaurant received high praise in the AA's guide due to its "imaginatively composed" food and attentive service.

Situated in a converted coach house on the fringes of Epping Forest, it has a rustic chic decor, with high vaulted ceilings and polished wooden tables.

In terms of food there are a number of succulent dishes to choose from, including a venison fillet, radicchio, blackberries, potato and swede dauphinoise.

Galvin Green Man, Chelmsford (Two Rosettes)

The Galvin Green Man was named the best pub in the UK earlier this year as part of the National Pub & Bar Awards.

It’s also one of the oldest pubs in Essex, having been built in 1341, and its location in the countryside with the River Chelmer running through its beer garden doesn’t exactly hurt its charm.

Commendation came in for its high-quality food and drink, impeccable service and all-round pub experience.
