One side of the A13 has been closed throughout the morning due to a serious crash between a car and motorbike.
The Londonbound carriageway has been closed at the Five Bells interchange since 8am this morning because of the incident.
Police were called to the stretch between Basildon and Stanford-le-Hope around 7am amid reports of a collision.
A man, aged in his 30s, was rushed to hospital for treatment while officers arrested a woman on suspicion of drug driving.
A police spokesman added: "The road remains closed at the Five Bells junction and is likely to remain closed for the rest of the morning."
The closure has caused lenghty tailbacks, with long queues reported back to the Pitsea flyover.
Thurrock Council says drivers heading Londonbound can expect delays of up to 30 minutes.
