This collection of images from the Gazette’s archives from a decade ago show how the town turned out to celebrate the official annual switching on of Colchester town centre’s Christmas lights in High Street and Lion Walk.
Six year-old schoolgirl Violet Wilson was the star of the show after winning the honour of switching on the lights.

The Montgomery Infants School pupil had earned the prize after entering a competition organised by Colchester Retail/Business Association and Garrison Radio.
She had to say why she would like to be mayor. Violet responded: “So I can eat sweets and stop thieves.”
Violet was accompanied by Colchester mayor for 2011/2012, Helen Chuah.
