A woman who was the former flatmate of Grace Millane’s killer has spoken about how he was an ‘elaborate’ liar.

Miss Millane was strangled to death in a hotel room in Auckland, New Zealand in December 2018, the day before her 22nd birthday.

She had met her killer Jesse Kempson on the dating app Tinder before they shared some drinks at a few bars.

She died in the man's apartment in the CityLife Hotel.

Appearing on This Morning Millie Mason said he was an 'elaborate' liar.

She said: “He said he was coming over to New Zealand to buy bars to add to the franchise his father owned. That was his story.

“He owed us money, there was always an excuse. He was ‘waiting on money from his accountant in Australia’.

“It stopped making sense.”

Miss Mason was speaking ahead of The Murder of Grace Millane: Social Media Murders which airs on ITV 2 tonight.

The new true-crime series focuses on a real crime that resulted in the death of a young person and looks at how social media played a role in bringing together the culprit and the victim.

Ms Mason said she and her fellow flatmates felt there were some red flags with Kempson.

She added: “Eventually you stop believing the stories, there were so many stories that you start to say, ‘Really?’ It stops making sense.”

One of her flatmates slept with a knife while staying in the property alone because she was scared of him.

Miss Mason added: “He came home drunk and broke some furniture and she was scared.

“When he was drunk, the façade just goes a little bit. You immediately think, what are you hiding?”

Miss Mason said she was both shocked and not shocked after hearing Miss Millane had been killed by Kempson.

She added: “You're shocked it happened but there is a voice in your head saying, ‘Your instinct wasn't wrong, there was something wrong here’.

“We did listen to it.”

The Murder of Grace Millane: Social Media Murders airs at 9pm on Monday on ITV 2.
