Coronavirus cases are falling across Southend, according to the latest data.

The borough recorded 671 new cases in the seven days to November 10 – that was 77 fewer than the week before.

Both Basildon (683) and Thurrock (489) are still recording higher numbers of weekly cases.

Blenheim Park has seen the biggest drop in infections in Southend, while there has also been a significant fall in Thorpe Bay and West Leigh.

But other neighbourhoods have seen cases go the other way, with West Shoebury seeing a 83 per cent rise in the past week.

Southend’s top health chief, Krishna Ramkhelawon, has urged residents to wear masks despite the encouraging fall in infections.

He told the Echo people’s behaviour will impact on whether there is a surge in cases in the build up to Christmas.

It comes as Boris Johnson refused to rule out a lockdown over the festive period should hospitalisations and cases rise.

The Prime Minister said during a press briefing he would “not rule anything out” when it came to future restrictions.

But he added there was “nothing in the data” at the moment to suggest plan B – the reintroduction of face masks and use of Covid passports – would be needed.
