Police say Wickford High Street will remain closed throughout the afternoon after a pedestrian was struck by a car.

Paramedics were first called to the incident around 9.30am today and the road was shut soon after once police were called to the scene.

The pedestrian, a man in his 80s, was said to have suffered a serious head injury.

He was airlifted to the Royal London Hospital via the Essex and Herts Air Ambulance for further treatment.

A police spokesman said another man has been arrested in connection with the crash.

An investigation is now underway and witnesses are asked to get in touch with police.

The spokesman added: “The road will remain closed into this afternoon as officers carry out their investigations.

“An 86-year-old man from Wickford has been arrested on suspicion of causing serious injury by dangerous driving.

“He remains in custody for questioning.

Anyone who witnessed the incident, has dashcam or CCTV footage of it should get in touch with us as soon as possible by calling 101 and citing incident 272 of November 18.”
