Southend has said goodbye to its much-loved MP Sir David Amess.

Thousands of people lined the streets to pay their respects during a procession through the town today, which saw the Southend West MP's casket carried round by a horse-drawn hearse.

It came following his funeral service in St Mary’s Church in Prittlewell which was attended by family and close friends.

During the service, Rayleigh and Wickford MP Mark Francois delivered a powerful eulogy where he paid tribute to his close friend.

Ann Widdecombe also spoke during the service and delivered a statement from Sir David’s family who insisted some good will come from his tragic death.

Following the procession, Sir David’s casket was taken to the chapel of rest.

A second service - a requiem mass - will be held in Sir David’s honour tomorrow at Westminster Cathedral.

The Archbishop of Westminster, Cardinal Vincent Nichols, will preside while Archbishop Claudio Gugerotti, the Apostolic Nuncio to Great Britain, will deliver a message from Pope Francis.

The Roman Catholic Priest for Parliament, Canon Pat Browne, will give the homily.

The service is expected to be attended by current and former parliamentarians, and Ms Widdecombe will give the eulogy while doorkeepers from the House of Commons are set to provide a guard of honour.

Cathedral choristers and choirs from Southend, including the Leigh Orpheus and the Music Man Project, will sing.

The service is due to be held at 10.30am.
