THE MOST dangerous roads for cyclists in Southend have been revealed.

The reported number of pedal cyclists killed or seriously injured increased by 11% in the last 10 years in the UK.

When it came to local authorities with the most accidents involving pedal cyclists in the UK, Essex was 12th most with 263 in 2020 alone.

According to the Office for National Statistics, during 2020, miles cycled per person increased by 62% compared to 2019, to the highest level since 2002.

To look a little closer into the City of Southend, an interactive tool called Crash Map allows you to see where ‘fatal’, ‘serious’ or ‘slight’ accidents have happened in your area.

In Southend, accidents where a pedal cyclist was the casualty, there were 45 fatal, serious, or slight accidents in 2020, which is an increase of 25% compared to 2019.

However, in 2020, there was only 9 fatal or serious, pedal cyclist accidents, which is a decrease of more than 40%.

The road that was most dangerous in the Southend area in 2020, is the A13.

The A13 saw the most fatal, serious, or slight accidents in 2020.

It was closely followed by the A127 Southend Arterial Road.

The town centre in Southend also saw a number of accidents too.
