CHEEKY squirrels have been blamed for causing a delay to the switch on of a popular Christmas lights in Leigh.

The display, in the Leigh Library Gardens, was due to be lit up for the first time this evening and run throughout the next three weeks.

But organisers have revealed the gardens will remain in darkness for the foreseeable future after it was discovered squirrels had caused damage to the tree lights.

Leigh Town Council has revealed the issue will affect the entire display.

In a statement on Facebook, bosses said: “We are frustrated and sorry to inform you that during installation of our festive lights in Leigh Library Gardens yesterday we discovered that squirrels have chewed through our tree lights (previously installed).

“Until these lights are replaced we cannot turn on power to the display, as all lights are connected through to the same power source.

“We really hope this will be resolved by the end of the week ready for the addition of our lanterns on Friday and will keep you informed.

“Please help spread the word.

When they are up and running, the lights will be available to view from 7.30am each day.

The lower gate will close at 4pm daily, while the upper gate will close at 6pm Monday to Thursday, and 7pm Friday to Sunday.
