A CORRINGHAM school was put into lockdown this morning as police descended on the site.

Essex Police has now confirmed that it was alerted to a threat to the school which has since been deemed to have been a hoax.

One parent outside the school told the Echo that parents were gathering at the school gates unaware of what was unfolding inside.

Many feared the worst as rumours spread on social media about the severity of the situation.

"It looks like the kids are being led out at the moment, I think they are evacuating it," the parent said at about 12.50pm.

"There are lots of parents here at the gates."

An Essex Police spokesperson said: "We received a report of threat to Gable Hall School, in Corringham, shortly before 11am this morning.

"Units were immediately sent to the scene to ensure the safety of staff and pupils.

"Our investigations have determined this was a hoax and there is no threat to the school.

"Our enquiries are ongoing.

"Officers will remain on the scene for reassurance for staff, pupils and parents."
