PLANS have been submitted to convert a betting shop into six flats and a commercial store.

The development would see the Coral betting shop at 7a Station Avenue, Wickford, replaced by homes and a commercial space.

Details have yet to be released on the what would fill the commercial space, but planning documents show the flats would comprise of two one-bedroom homes and four two-bedroom flats.

The existing site has been in mixed used with the frontage ground floor being used by high street betting giants Coral and the upper floor being used as a flat. The rear parts of the site are overgrown with foliage.

This is the applicants second attempt to persuade the council to give the scheme the green light, after previously having permission refused in December 2020, a decision which was upheld on appeal.

In planning documents, the applicant said: “The proposals make effective and efficient use of a brownfield site in a sustainable location to provide valuable residential and commercial space. With the station a short walk away and all the facilities of the town in close proximity, the site is highly sustainable.”

The proposed buildings would be two and a half storeys in height with the top floor provided within the roof space, slightly taller than the adjacent two storey building.

Cycle parking would be provided in two locations for the residents, as well as some visitor cycle parking provision, but documents submitted to the council show no planned car parking.
