A NEW police chief who “cares deeply about the community” is ready to take charge in Basildon and tackle violent crime.

Essex Police has appointed a new district commander to lead the force in the borough.

Acting Chief Inspector Dan McHugh has taken up the role after more than 15 years serving with the force.

He said: ‘‘I am delighted to have this incredible opportunity to become the district commander for Basildon, and I am excited to start leading our community and local policing teams.

“I care deeply about our district, and my dedicated and enthusiastic officers are committed to providing a first-class service to our communities.”

Mr McHugh joined Essex Police in 2006 and has served the communities of Basildon, Pitsea, Laindon, Billericay and Wickford in various operational roles rising to the rank of inspector.

He added: “My priorities will be to effectively tackle and reduce violence in all its forms, from street crime to domestic abuse, tackle illegal drugs and support victims of crime, whilst working with our partners to enhance the lives of all our residents and those that work or study in the district.

“I encourage and welcome our residents and visitors to come and speak to my officers and Community Support Officers when you see them on patrol, they are here to listen and to help you.

“If we all work together, we can continue to make Basildon a wonderful place to live, work and visit.”

Acting Chief Inspector McHugh brings a wealth of operational and strategic policing experience to his new role from the specialisms of public order, armed policing command, proactive repeat offender disruption teams, body worn video implementation and working on the local policing and community policing teams.

Throughout his police service Mr McHugh has also received a number of local commendations for his work to tackle illegal drugs and supporting bereaved families.

Wishing the residents of Basildon a Merry Christmas, Mr McHugh said: “And for those heading out to celebrate the festive holiday I wish you and your families a safe, peaceful and joyous time. Please look after each other and enjoy your celebrations.”
