Echo: Hedgehogs are regularly brought to the hospitalHedgehogs are regularly brought to the hospital

Sue Schwar founded the South Essex Wildlife Hospital in 1995. They have provided veterinary care and rehabilitation for wildlife and are open seven days a week, 365 days of the year.

In the first two weeks of the new year the hospital has helped a very poorly fox and nurtured and fed baby badgers and seal pups.

They rely entirely on donations to fund their care of sick, injured and orphaned wildlife. They aim to release animals back into the wild. They do not turn away any wild animals.

Hedgehogs are one of the most common patients at the hospital where injuries and illnesses range from broken legs, dog bites, severe damage caused by strimmers and lawnmowers to Pneumonia and bad breathing caused by lung worms.

Any time a hedgehog is seen out in daylight it will be ill and need urgent help. The hospital team advise people to pick it up, pop in a box and contact them for advice.

The hospital has teamed up with The Essex Lottery. Tickets cost £1 and there is a chance to win £25,000. Visit www.essexlottery.co.uk and search ‘Wildlife Hospital’.
