POLICE will be carrying out additional high visibility patrols in a bid to tackle the increase in robberies around Southend High Street.

This comes after two teenagers were charged with robbery earlier this month following an incident where a 13-year-old boy had his mountain bike stolen.

Chief Inspector Ian Hughes, who is district commander for Southend, said he wants people to feel safe while enjoying the town centre.

He added: “We know robberies are frightening incidents and can leave people feeling worried about being in the areas where they happen.

“We are taking proactive action to tackle this issue, including increasing the number of high visibility patrols along the High Street and continuing to work with our partners.

“The CCTV system across the town also plays a crucial role. We work really well with the CCTV operators who do a fantastic job in bringing incidents to our attention and identifying those involved."

Officers are also said to be working with British Transport Police to identify anyone using the rail network to come into town with the intent to cause crime and disorder.

Mr Hughes added: “And we have a dedicated partnership group consisting of the police, Southend Borough Council, and the Business Improvement District dedicated to the night-time economy.

“This includes dealing with issues as they arise and initiating plans to ensure your safety.”

"And this work is having an impact."
