New food hygiene ratings have been awarded to eight of Southend’s establishments.

We have taken a look at the latest ratings to see how restaurants, takeaways and other establishments which sell food have fared.

What do the numbers mean?

0 - urgent improvement necessary

1 - major improvements necessary

2 - improvements necessary

3 - business generally satisfactory

4 - business good on assessment

5 - business seen as very good

Each restaurant is also judged on three categories ‘food hygiene and safety’, ‘structural compliance’ and ‘confidence in management’.

Each section is awarded a mark from ‘very good’ to ‘very bad’ and for ‘confidence in management’ from ‘high’ to ‘no confidence’.

Restaurants, cafes and canteens

The following ratings have been given to three restaurants, cafes or canteens:

• Rated 5: Great Tides at Westcliff Hotel, 18 - 20 Westcliff Parade, Westcliff-On-Sea, Essex; rated on January 10

• Rated 4: Cliffords Coffee Shop at Cliffords Coffee, 785 Southchurch Road, Southend-On-Sea, Essex; rated on December 20

• Rated 4: Sutton's Local at 68 Sutton Road, Southend-On-Sea, Essex; rated on October 27

  • Rated 4: Cheris Cafe, at 93 Hamlet Court Road, Westcliff-On-Sea, Essex; rated on December 17.
  • Rated 3: ANA'S PITA, at 1129 London Road, Leigh-On-Sea, Essex ; rated on December 17.

Pubs, bars and nightclubs

And two ratings have been handed to pubs, bars or nightclubs:

• Rated 5: MooMoo Clubrooms Southend (Fever Bars Southend Ltd) at Basement, Maitland House, Warrior Square, Southend-On-Sea; rated on January 5

• Rated 5: Saks Sports Bar at 23 - 25 Clifftown Road, Southend-On-Sea, Essex; rated on January 4
