A busy town centre road was shut by police after reports of a serious incident.

Images and reports are circulating online of the incident in Chichester Road, Southend at about 11pm last night.

Police, a cordon and medics were on the scene and the road was shut in both directions as officers carried out investigations.

Images show cordons shutting off large parts of the road and also nearby buildings in the road.

Essex Police and the East of England Ambulance Service were contacted for comment.

Police have since confirmed they were called shortly before 8.45pm yesterday to concerns for welfare of the man on the Victoria Plaza off Southend High Street.

A spokesman for Essex Police said: "We were called to concerns for the welfare of a man on top of a building in the area of Victoria Plaza in Southend High Street shortly before 8.45pm yesterday.

"Officers attended. Sadly, the man later died.

"Enquiries to establish the circumstances which led up to the incident are ongoing."
