THE family of Canvey boy, who passed away from cancer aged 11, are continuing his legacy with a celebration on what would have been his 21st birthday.

Danny Green, from Canvey, sadly passed away following a battle with brain cancer in 2012, and his family set up The Danny Green Fund to help other families in similar positions to themselves.

While battling the brain tumour, Danny underwent six operations and endless cycles of chemotherapy, which left him with Posterior Fossa Syndrome (PFS) meaning he couldn’t communicate, move aided, hold his head up, balance or walk.

His family, along with friends, schools, and businesses on the island, are marking and donating to his fund on what would have been his 21st this Sunday.

Danny’s mum Lisa said: “Marking Danny’s birthdays without him never gets easier, but we are comforted by the fact his legacy has raised more than £750,000 over 10 years, sponsoring 30 days of research and helping around 40 children with Posterior Fossa Syndrome.

“After losing Danny, we wanted his life to make a difference and know that he hadn’t died in vain.

“At the time there was absolutely no information about PFS, so it has been lovely to be able to offer these families hope and to know that research has been sponsored in Danny’s name.

“We’re so grateful to everyone who has donated to The Danny Green Fund, taken on a challenge or held an event as without you none of this could have happened.”

Several schools, including Leigh Beck Infant and Junior schools where Danny was a pupil, are holding non-uniform days for Danny’s 21st Birthday.

Sue Farrington Smith MBE, chief executive at Brain Tumour Research, said: “Our hearts go out to Danny’s family as they face his 21st birthday without him.

“Brain Tumour Research is indebted to The Danny Green Fund for sponsoring 30 days of research and inspired by the likes of Danny, Brain Tumour Research is determined to change outcomes for brain tumour patients and ultimately find a cure.”
