A SUPERMARKET giant has unveiled plans to set-up yet another new store in south Essex.

Aldi has proposed to refurbish the current co-op in Queens Park Avenue, Billericay, to create its first store in the town.

The planning application also states the new shop would create 50 jobs, although it is unclear how many jobs would be lost when the Co-op closes.

It is believed the Co-op’s lease is due to expire later this year, meaning the building will be empty.

Aldi has proposed a number of changes to the current store, including a new shopfront glazing, fascia banding, rendering of brickwork, new entrance canopy, customer ramp access and works to service area to create new service pod.

They also have put forward changes to the site for an extension of car park by 21 spaces to create room for 147 vehicles.

The planning application adds: “Co-op lease is due to expire with the intention being for Aldi to convert and modernise the existing food store to facilitate their swift occupation of the site to ensure continuity of food store provision.

“The Co-op store currently provides the main anchor facility for the Pantiles Queens Park Local centre, with Aldi’s intention to introduce their brand and provide an enhanced food offer for the local community.”

‘Boost for our town’

Councillor Phil Turner, who represents the Billericay West ward, said this would become his local supermarket if plans are accepted.

He said: “This is terrific news and I look forward to Aldi taking over the reins at Queens Park.

“Aldi are well respected in the world of supermarket and more than 20 years since first appearing in the UK, they have steadily built a brand reputation for quality and value.

“I personally would welcome this move and if the planning is approved, look forward to shopping there as it would become my local supermarket.

“The jobs will also be a welcome boost for residents and our local economy as such jobs are always welcome and I am sure these posts will be hotly contested too.”

Basildon Council will now meet to vote on the plans.
