A 12-year-old boy was hit by a car while cycling, with the driver “reversing around him before fleeing” the scene in a hit-and-run.

The boy has escaped with minor cuts and bruises, but his mum fears he will be “scarred for life” by the incident at roughly 6.45pm on Saturday, on Eastwood Road, Rayleigh.

The child was taken to hospital for numerous tests before being released.

However, his mum has been left furious, claiming that the driver failed to stop and drove off immediately.

Mum, Michelle Cox, said: “ He was extremely lucky that there is no real damage “But I am shocked that someone could just hit a child and just leave them especially when they knew they had hit him as they had to reverse to get past him.

“He is 12 years of age, and I would hate for someone else to have to go through this experience.

“It is shocking, and he is now scarred for life.

“He no longer wants to go out on this bike and has not left the home since the event happened.”

The boy, whose mum asked he is kept anonymous, was put in a neck brace when he arrived at hospital, with his mum admitting he is “extremely lucky” not be seriously hurt.

She added: “He has several nasty cuts and some bruises due to the incident, an ambulance was called, but due to the time it was going to take, it was cancelled, and we were advised to take him straight to A&E.

“He was seen immediately by the paediatrics team why promptly decided to treat this as a trauma case due to the nature of his wounds as they thought they he may have lost conciseness.

“He was then put on to a bed and his head was secured and he was examined by 10-12 doctors and nurses from the trauma team.

“He was given an ECG and a CT scan along with bloods taken and they results came back with blood in his urine and that he needs to have this checked out in a weeks’ time.

“I just hope no one else has to go through this and that witnesses can be found to whoever has done this.”

Essex Police have been contacted for comment.
