CAMPAIGNERS united in a defiant show of solidarity over the weekend in a seafront protest of the ongoing contamination of a beauty spot.

Southend Against Sewage activists gathered near the SeaLife Adventure Centre, in Southend, on Saturday morning before embarking on their Day of Action walk.

The eco-conscious event saw the demonstrators raise awareness of the release of raw sewage into the Thames Estuary and the impact it is having on wildlife.

In a bid to get their message across and have their concerns heard, the protestors marched along Marine Parade, to the Arches and then along Western Esplanade.

The campaign then concluded near the beach where guest speakers such Southend councillor Matt Dent delivered speeches to the crowds.

He said: “I was delighted to have been invited by Southend Against Sewage yesterday to address their protest at Southend seafront.

“Water companies have made massive profits since privatisation, but consistently failed to make the investments required to keep the sewer system functioning.

“It's unacceptable that in 2022 our waters can be unfit to swim in due to contamination with sewage.

“Privatisation has failed, and the only solution is to renationalise the water companies.”
