SOUTHEND is set to become party central, with more than 100 applications received for jubilee street parties over the special four-day bank holiday weekend.

There is still time to apply for street party permits and road closures ahead of the celebrations on June 2-5, which will mark Elizabeth II becoming the first British monarch to celebrate a platinum jubilee.

And there are also a series of special musical events planned for each day at Priory Park’s bandstand.

Tandra Forster, executive director for adults and communities at Southend Council, said: “I think it’s wonderful that over the four-day bank holiday weekend, so many communities will be gathering to celebrate this historic event.

“Street parties are a great opportunity for people to come together on special occasions, and as our Queen celebrates 70 years on the throne, I am pleased that the council is taking the initiative to make sure neighbourhoods celebrate in the best and safest way possible.

“I would urge anyone thinking of holding a street party to visit our website or get in touch for help and assistance, sooner rather than later.”

Each day of the bank holiday will see a range of musical entertainment at the Priory Park bandstand.

On Thursday, June 2, the Jubilee Festival of Brass will run from between 1-6pm.

On the Friday, The Famous Potatoes will perform from 3-4.30pm.

Saturday’s fun will be courtesy of community choir Southend Vox between 3-4.30pm.

And The Show Choir will wrap up the entertainment, from 3-4.30pm on Sunday June 5.

Katie McEwan, musical director for Southend Vox, said: “We can’t wait to commemorate such a special weekend.

“We sing a really strong breadth of music, pop, rock, soul gospel – you name it, we sing it. Those who venture down will be treated to a real romp through some great British music.”

Picnicware will be laid out, allowing residents to bring their own food along to enjoy the show.

“Think of it a bit like proms in the park,” Ms McEwan added.

“It’s an opportunity for anyone who won’t perhaps get a chance to celebrate with friends and family to come and celebrate with us and have our own version of a street party at the bandstand.”

There is still time to apply to host your own street party. To complete an online application form, or for advice visit www.southend.gov.uk/hosting-event/organising-street-party. A minimum of 28 days is needed to process the paperwork.
