SEVERAL roads will be closed in Southend this month as part of the ongoing resurfacing scheme.

Southend Council is aiming to repair 47 roads and 54 pavements across the city between now and March 2023.

Around £10m is being spent on the works.

Work has recently been completed on West Road in Westcliff, but council bosses say six more roads will be shut in the coming weeks for resurfacing.

They are:

  • Snakes Lane (between Rayleigh Road and 46 Snakes Lane)

Work to take place overnight on May 12 and 13

  • Rayleigh Road (between 149 Rayleigh Road and The Elms Café)

Work to take place overnight between May 16 and 19

  • Rochford Road (between numbers 14b and 137)

Work to take place overnight between May 20 and 23

  • Hobleythick Lane (between Prittlewell Chase and Earls Hall Baptist Church)

Work to take place overnight between May 24 and 26

  • Eastern Avenue (between Fossetts Way bus stop to 220 Eastern Avenue)

Work to take place overnight between May 27 and 30

  • Royal Artillery Way eastbound (between Garon Park roundabout to Culvert on the bend)

Work to take place overnight on May 31 and June 1

Council bosses say all work is dependent on the weather, as crews are not able to lay new roads in adverse weather.

Pavements in Woodlands Park, Edinburgh Avenue and Ambleside Drive are also being resurfaced this month.

Southend Council's transport boss Steven Wakefield said: “I am pleased to see the significant investment into our roads and pavements continue, with the agreed £10m investment leading to 47 roads and 54 pavements being resurfaced in this financial year.

“To kick off the resurfacing programme this year, we have seven roads and three pavements scheduled for resurfacing during May.

“In addition to this we are offering our residents a discount for dropped curb installation outside their homes, if the footpath outside the home is being resurfaced.

“We are absolutely committed to improving our roads and pavements to ensure local people can travel in and around Southend-on-Sea safely, and we will continue to invest in our roads so that they reach the standards our new city deserves.”
