Poverty campaigner Jack Monroe is set to sue a Tory MP who claimed she was profiteering from the poor.

Monroe, of Southend, took to Twitter to reveal she has instructed lawyers after Lee Anderson, MP for Ashfield, made comments during an interview with deputy leader of the Reclaim Party Martin Daubney.

In a clip of the interview, posted obline, Daubney refers to Monroe as the “self-appointed representative of the impoverished”, adding she has “sold loads of books. Done quite well out of it. No doubt, probably earns more than the prime minister”.

Anderson responds by stating: “She’s taking money off some of the most vulnerable people in society and making an absolute fortune on [sic] the back of people.”

On Twitter, Jack Monroe said: “Frothing right wingers so desperate to falsely prove that I’m a hypocritical millionaire that they’re willing to libel me extensively in order to try to make it happen. Beautiful.

“There are certain people painting me as ‘enjoying this’ or similar; I can assure you there is no single element of any of this that is remotely enjoyable. It’s a colossal amount of time, energy, mental physical and emotional labour, and it’s all very ugly, exhausting, and hard.”

Only a few days earlier, Mr Anderson had provoked ire from campaigners and MPs after claiming food banks were unnecessary because the main cause of food poverty is a lack of cooking and budgetary skills.

Anderson said utritious meals could be easily cooked for 30p, to which Munro responded Anderson was a "rich, white privileged male".

Monroe added on Twitter Anderson and Daubney were “playing a very expensive game of chicken with someone who has a proven track record of crossing this particular road without fear nor favour,” referring to a libel victory against Katie Hopkins in 2017.
