A PRIMARY school which had previously been ordered to make improvements has been praised for its ambition following a successful inspection.

Leigh North Street Primary School has been rated ‘good’ by Ofsted inspectors who made a two-day trip there earlier this year.

It represents a big upturn in fortunes for the school which had been rated ‘requires improvement’ following its last inspection in 2018.

In the new report, published this week, inspectors stated pupils were both “happy” and “hardworking” during their visit in March.

The report said: “Pupils are given a wide range of responsibilities, such as job as friendship ambassadors, prefects, and recycling monitors to allow them to make a useful contribution to the life of the school.

“Relationships between pupils and adults are friendly and respectful and the leaders are highly ambitious for all pupils.”

The school was rated good in all areas, including in quality of education and leadership.

It currently has 604 pupils on its books, all aged between five and 11.

Inspectors had claimed pupils across the school were falling below national learning standards four years ago.

But they were full of praise in their new report, stating that both teachers and leaders had made improvements.

The report added: “The mathematics curriculum is well planned and is a strength of the school.

“In subjects such as history, science, and physical education (PE), leaders have also carefully considered the order in which learning is introduced to pupils, so that it is well sequenced.

“Teachers have strong subject knowledge, and they check on what pupils have understood.

“Staff are proud to work at the school, and they appreciate the consideration from leaders about workload and the help leaders provide to manage it.”

The inspectors also highlighted the effective safeguarding arrangements in place at the school.

However, they said bosses still needed to reassess procedures for checking pupil’s progress in key subjects, such as English and Maths.

Other recommended improvements included better preparing early years pupils for the step up to Year One.

The school were contacted for a comment about the improved rating but didn’t respond in time for print.
