Is your current job wearing you down? But First: Where and What is Gibraltar?

Gibraltar is a small British territory located at the very tip of Spain. Since 1704, it has been a key point in British military history. In WWII, Gibraltar’s position in the Mediterranean made it an important chokepoint that pushed the Allies to victory.

Now that the guns and cannons are silent, Gibraltar has become a major tourist site. If you’re looking for a job, though, what can you do there? Never fear; you still have options!

Gambling

Gibraltar has a robust gaming industry, both on- and offline. In fact, gambling in Gibraltar is so popular that Lottoland is one of the biggest employers there, and with so many taking part in Lottoland lottery betting, it is no wonder the company is able to employ so many people. Gambling licenses are available for casino games, horse betting, fantasy sports, and various forms of online gambling. The reason this sector is booming is related to taxes; taxes on gaming establishments and companies are much, much lower than in other parts of Europe. If you ever wanted to run a casino, Gibraltar might be the place to do it.

Shipping

Gibraltar’s biggest draw for war, business, and pleasure has always been its location. Its spot by the Mediterranean Sea is ideal for both military strategy and trade. Even the local monkeys may have been traded sometime during the Iron Age—that is how trade-centered Gibraltar is. Of course, if you only need to look outside your window for a seaside view, that’s great, too!

Even without cannons firing, the Strait of Gibraltar gets its share of vessels. The territory is still known for its expertise in shipping, sometimes serving up to 7,000 ships a year! If the port of London wasn’t busy enough for you, maybe it’s time for a change.

Tourism

If you like learning new things, public speaking, and talking about history, maybe you should consider a job in Gibraltar’s robust tourism industry. Here are just a few of the reasons tourists come to Gibraltar:

  • Gibraltar is the place for history buffs. The history of Gibraltar goes back to prehistory; several Neanderthals have been found in Gibraltar’s rock formations, leading some archaeologists to believe that Gibraltar was the Neanderthals’ last stand. Since then, it has been inhabited by the Phoenicians, Romans, Carthaginians, Vandals, Visigoths, Moors, and Spanish, all of which have left their mark on the area. It is currently considered British territory, so a lot should feel familiar, too.
  • According to Gibraltar.com, military engineer Sergeant-Major Henry Ince was tasked with finding a way to get cannons to the north face (“the Notch”) of the Rock of Gibraltar to counter a naval assault from France and Spain. He devised a plan to tunnel through over 25 metres of rock so that a cannon could be fired at the oncoming ships from the high perch. His only tools were sledgehammers, metal bars, gunpowder, and raw muscle. If you are looking for a job in engineering, these tunnels are a must-see!
  • Finally, Gibraltar has wild monkeys! They are technically Barbary macaques, which once lived in the British Isles, but the Gibraltar population is the only one that remains in Europe today. The monkeys have been on Gibraltar since before colonization, so you can observe them with a clean conscience. As with many “friendly” wild animals, however, feeding the monkeys is not recommended. They may, however, help themselves to anything you leave hanging out!

There’s a little something for everybody in Gibraltar. Why not talk about a topic you really enjoy, and get paid for doing it?

Conclusion

If your work is sucking the life out of you, maybe it’s time to think about working abroad. This will be especially easy if you’ve got experience in shipping or are passionate about British military history. If working at a casino has ever crossed your mind, Gibraltar might be the place for you, too! As per Gibraltarlaw.com, British citizens can work in Gibraltar without needing a visa. But act fast—Gibraltar is small, and that’s reflected in the job pool! If a monkey grabs a job before you do, don’t say we didn’t warn you!
