POLICE are urging vehicle owners to remain vigilant following reports of further thefts in south Essex.

Officers in Castle Point have issued the warning after receiving reports of nine vehicle thefts in the past two weeks.

The majority of thefts happened in Benfleet and on Canvey.

Detectives believe many of the incidents saw thieves use keyless entry systems to get inside.

However, two of the thefts saw the victims’ homes broken into and car keys taken.

A police spokesman said: “Please ensure your vehicles are fully secure, with all valuables removed.

“Listen for the bleep if you are using remote central locking.

“If keyless, place keys including any spares in a signal blocking device, such as a 'faraday' bag. These are available online.

“Always keep your keys out of sight, away from doors, windows and worktops. Close and double lock all UPVC windows and doors.

“Do not give the thief any opportunity to steal one of your most prized possessions.”

It comes as police last week warned about a rise in the number of Ford Fiestas being stolen in Leigh and Westcliff.

Range Rovers have also been targeted by thieves in the Southend area in recent weeks.
