BOSSES at a Southend seafront Wimpy destroyed in an arson attack remain hopeful that the restaurant will re-open - despite the site remaining untouched since the blaze.

The restaurant in Marine Parade, Southend, was gutted by the fire in the early hours of January 16.

Firefighters called to the scene in the early hours found both the ground and first floor were 100 per cent alight, while the roof was 50 per cent alight.

Now bosses at the chain say they hope to see a return of the business but cannot give any timescales as the incident is still being dealt with by an insurance firm.

A spokesman for Wimpy said: “Following the fire at Wimpy Marine Parade, the matter is still in the hands of the insurance company. Until such time as its report is complete, we are unable to provide any further information or give an indication as to the likely timetable.

“We continue to liaise with the franchisee and, as we have said before, we sincerely hope that at some stage Wimpy will be able to return to Marine Parade.”

Councillors and community leaders say they hope it does not take too long and the popular restaurant can open again soon.

Carole Mulroney, councillor responsible for tourism, said: “It’s a very traditional business and is something everyone recognises. We would all love to see it back again.

“It was a good business and is so well known too and our visitors and residents knew about it. It’s a beneficial part of our seafront and I feel for the workers and owners who have lost their jobs due to the fire.

“People like Wimpy and it’s good value for money too. This restaurant has been a staple on our seafront for many, many years and it was a successful business too.”

She said she hopes to see the jobs, business and it’s offering back on the seafront for residents and visitors soon.

Neighbouring properties were evacuated as a precaution on the night of the blaze and five fire crews, including the aerial ladder platform from Grays attended the blaze.

Essex Police and Essex Fire Service confirmed the fire is believed to have been started deliberately and investigations are taking place.
